UK Crypto Investors Are Losing Pensions to AI Trading Bots

Britain's pension crisis just got a new villain — and it does not work on Wall Street. It runs on code.
Thousands of UK retirement savers have quietly moved portions of their pension funds into self-directed crypto accounts over the past three years. Many handed control to AI-powered auto trading bots marketed as "passive income tools" on YouTube, Telegram, and TikTok. The results have been devastating.
Financial watchdogs at the UK's Financial Conduct Authority confirmed in early 2025 that complaints related to AI trading bot losses exceeded £340 million in reported damages — and that figure only covers cases that were actually reported. Experts believe the real number is three to four times higher.
The bots are not illegal on their own. The fraud happens in how they are sold. Promoters in the UK, often operating from UAE and Eastern Europe, use fake celebrity endorsements, fabricated profit screenshots, and countdown timers to pressure ordinary people into depositing their savings. Once funds are deposited the withdrawals slow down, fees multiply, and customer support disappears.
What makes this uniquely dangerous in the UK is that many victims used their SIPP — Self Invested Personal Pension — accounts to fund these bots. SIPP accounts allow flexible investment choices, which was meant to empower savers. Instead it created a door that fraudsters walked straight through.
Canada and Australia have reported nearly identical patterns. In Canada alone the Competition Bureau flagged over 200 AI trading platforms in 2024 as potentially deceptive. Australian Securities regulators shut down 43 bot platforms between January and September 2024.
The UK government is now considering mandatory registration for all AI financial tools sold to retail investors. But legislation moves slowly while the bots move fast.
If someone promises you guaranteed crypto returns through an AI bot — in any country — that promise itself is the red flag.
Retirement savings take decades to build. A bot can empty them in weeks.
